Amazon OneLink and Using Automatic International Monetization

Affiliate marketers don't need to keep Amazon OneTag in the footer of your sites. Instead, you may want to use Amazon OneLink.

Amazon made a very cryptic announcement that could mean big things for the affiliate marketing industry.

Based on the beta feedback, we decided to stop supporting auto-tagging and Content Insights at this time. We recommend using our existing link creation tools here to tag your content. We will improve Content Insights based on your feedback and plan to re-launch at a later time.

We updated OneLink to work as a standalone tool, that does not require the installation of oneTag. We will shut down oneTag on April 17, 2020. Please remove it from your website before the deadline. No action is required for geo-direction, as OneLink will continue to function without oneTag.

What’s that now, Amazon? Are you saying that you will automatically monetize my international traffic without installing any Javascript?

Instead of trying to decipher Amazon’s announcement, we reached out to them. We asked:

When you say “No action is required for geo-direction, as OneLink will continue to function without oneTag,” does that mean my single main US tag will automatically monetize for all international Amazon Stores?

Is there any action that needs to be take for this to happen automatically behind the scenes?

We got an email response from Amazon Associates.

Amazon Associates Customer Service Email About OneLink

On April 17th, 2020, you will not need to keep the HTML code (OneTag) before the footer of your website to get it to redirect. As long as you have international store IDs linked, it will redirect on its own without the help of OneTag.

What Does This Mean For Amazon Associate Users Like You?

Well, it turns out, as affiliate marketers and site owners, we do not need to keep the HTML code (OneTag) before the footer of our websites for Amazon to automatically redirect international visitors.

That means you don’t need to use third-party tools to manage Amazon localization.

That said, this is only for Amazon products and OneLink doesn’t support all major storefronts yet. But I have a feeling they’ll be moving quickly on adding more support to OneLink now that it’s simplified.

More Updates From Amazon Associates

Amazon sent another email with more clarification:

As a reminder, we will shut down oneTag onĀ April 17, 2020. If you have not done so already, please remove it from your website before the deadline. No action is required for geo-direction, as OneLink will continue to function without oneTag.

I also had a chance to talk with other people in the affiliate industry who have looked into this more. From their research, it looks like Amazon will be doing all the redirection from their servers instead of using the javascript oneTag.

But apparently, the software is still a little clunky. So if you’re already using software that does International monetization for Amazon, you may wanna look into how well it works compared to what Amazon has rolled out. You might be better off sticking to what you’re already using.

However, if you’re not localizing your Amazon links, you can easily set this up in your Amazon Associates account.

We found out the answer is no. Currently, OneLink only works if you base your links off of .com. In other words, the automatic international monetization only works with US accounts.
