The SEO game is won by always staying ahead of your competitors, which means identifying keyword opportunities they haven’t thought about yet.
That’s easier said than done, which is why we’re sharing the ways we’ve been able to find hidden gems our competitors missed.
In this article, I’ll tell three ways experts conduct keyword research to find opportunities other blogger miss.
Keep reading if you’re ready to grow your organic traffic and leave the competition in the dust.
3 Non-Obvious Keyword Opportunities
#1 Pain-Point Keywords
Your ideal customers are searching for high-buying-intent keywords every day; you just don’t know what those keywords are.
Here’s an example: imagine your company is selling eco-friendly laundry detergent.
There’ll be a lot of competition for keywords like “best eco-friendly laundry detergent” and “eco-friendly laundry supplies.”
But there will be less competition for keywords like “how to get stains out of white shirts” or “is laundry detergent bad for the environment?” even though these keywords have a lot of buying intent.
By targeting your customer’s pain points, you can avoid competition and catch your customers when they’re ready to buy.
#2 Ask Your Audience
Spending your time racking your brain to come up with new keyword targets is a waste of time when you could just ask your audience what they want to read about.
If you’re selling products, survey your customers’ experiences. When you find out what they are still struggling with or what brought them to you in the first place, you’ll have what you need to reate associated content.
These long-tail keywords may have low search volume, but the conversion rate will more than make up for it.
#3 Improve Your Search Intent
Using Google Search Console, you can see how many impressions your site gets for your current rankings. You’ll also see how many clicks you receive from those keywords.
Then, you can optimize your content to best match the leading search terms.
Sometimes you have articles that are targeting one keyword, but ranking for another, which could drive more sales with the right content.
#4 Bonus: Use The Content Gap Tool
All the methods so far will help you find keyword ideas your competitors have missed. But you should also target your competitors’ keywords and try to snag their rankings.
Ahrefs Content Gap tool is the best way to do it.
All you do is enter your site’s URL, a few of your competitors’ URLs, and click “Show Keywords.”
Ahrefs (or similar SEO tools) will show you all the terms your competitors are ranking for that you aren’t.
TIP: You can change the intersections filter to only include keywords multiple of your competitors rank for. Give these keywords top priority.
Keyword Research FAQs
How Do I Find New Keyword Opportunities?
There are many ways to create a great list of keywords for your content marketing strategy. Look at competitor keywords, talk to your audience, and focus on pain points.
More than anything, focus on content for sales and content for backlinks. Those goals together will be the foundation of your SEO strategy.
What Are Untapped Keywords
In digital marketing, an untapped keyword is a keyword you should be targeting but aren’t yet. The most apparent untapped keywords are ones your competitors are ranking for, but you aren’t currently targeting.
What Makes A Good Keyword
The best keywords are the search queries that have the highest buying intent. There’s no point in writing long in-depth content for competition keywords if the traffic never converts.
What Keyword Difficulty Should I Target?
Keyword difficulty is a metric used by keyword research tools like Semrush, Moz, and Ahrefs to approximate how hard it will be to rank for a given keyword. But it’s mostly meaningless.
Look at the SERPs to accurately evaluate how difficult a keyword will be to rank for. If it’s all massive news sites ranking, you won’t be able to rank for that keyword. If the results are full of user-generated content like Quora and Reddit, you should be able to break through.
Finding Hidden Keyword Opportunities | Final Thoughts
With these keyword research strategies, you’re ready for your new content to dominate the organic search results.
My last tip for you is to focus most of your energy on creating high-quality content. It doesn’t matter if you find the right keywords and related terms if your audience doesn’t like your content.
Now, go out, find a plethora of target keywords, and drive your site’s search traffic through the roof.
